EUGAL: Ücker River crossing

Recently, we announced the collaboration between TDC International and GASCADE. GASCADE Gastransport GmbH, operates one of the largest natural gas infrastructures in Germany, and is working on certain trenchless sections of the European Gas Pipeline Link (EUGAL) project. The EUGAL project is expected to start flowing at the end of 2019 and will receive natural gas from the planned Nord Stream 2 and is intended to strengthen the supply of natural gas to Germany and Europe.

TDC was contracted by GASCADE to coat 376 pipes (around 7km) of DN 1400 for certain trenchless installation sections of the pipeline, with a customized pau wrap® GRP-coating specified by GASCADE. 270 of these pipes were additionally equipped with pau wrap® GRP-spacers for installation in micro-tunnels. These were all delivered on-time to GASCADE up until July 2018.

On July 10th 2019, TDC participated in the successful 1.3km Ücker River crossing in the North of Germany, installed  by a.hak, a sub-contractor of GASCADE. Spacers, acting as an extra protection for the pipe, were added to ensure a distance for installation of the pipeline in the  casing . In this case, TDC’s pipes were pulled through the cement casing with an HDD-Rig in order to reach its final destination. We are extremely pleased with the completion of this section of the pipeline and look forward to seeing the finalization of the project.

Case study – TDC uses Vacuworx’s vacuum

In early 2017, TDC received an order from Mannesmann Grossrohr (MGR) to coat over 2.1 km of DN1000 for Open Grid Europe’s 62 km gas pipeline Schwandorf-to-Forchheim loop line (LSF) with pau wrap®.

For logistical efficiency, it was decided to transport all 179 pipes via train on the Deutsche Bahn to TDC’s rail yard, located near the company’s production facility in Trollenhagen, Germany. From the rail yard, the PE-coated pipes needed to be carefully handled and placed on trucks in order to shuttle them between the factory and the yard.

Due to precise requirements and time constraints of the project, TDC began searching for an alternative approach to the traditional slinging method. It was particularly important to use a handling system that would not damage the pipes or their existing anti-corrosion layer.

Click HERE to find out how, with the help of Vacuworx’s RC 10 vacuum, TDC was able to efficiently handle and deliver the pipes.

TDC International is part of ZEELINK project

Natural gas is the most climate-friendly fossil energy source and essential for the successful implementation of Germany’s energy transition. Millions of households, commercial and industrial customers value natural gas as a safe source of energy and around 50 percent of all households in Germany are heated by natural gas. Currently, two different kinds of natural gas, which differ in particular in the methane content, are used throughout Germany: L-gas (low calorific gas) and H-gas (high calorific gas). More than five million household appliances for heating, hot water and industrial use are currently operated with L-gas throughout Germany. This is a share of around 25 percent of the total market. Nevertheless, by 2030 the portion of L-gas will fall by about 90 percent, mainly due to the decreasing gas reserves in Germany and the Netherlands.

To ensure that proven natural gas technologies can continue to be combined with renewable energies, households, commercial and industrial customers must be converted to the higher-quality H-gas – and also the gas grids in front of it. The ZEELINK transmission line will be an important part of this changeover.

The ZEELINK project includes the construction of the new ZEELINK pipeline from the Belgian-German border at Lichtenbusch to Sankt Hubert near Krefeld and on to Legden near Ahaus in North Rhine-Westphalia. The new pipeline thus makes an important contribution to security of supply in Germany and increases the transport capacity of natural gas from the north to the south.

Mannesmann Grossrohr GmbH is providing approximately 216 km of gas pipeline pipes with a diameter of 1,016 mm (DN 1000). Pipes for specific trenchless sections will be coated by TDCI’s reliable pau wrap® TL 5.0mm mechanical protection coating. We look forward to continuing our work on the ZEELINK project, contributing to sustainable and environmentally friendly energy supply solutions.

DCA-Europe honours TDC International

The Drilling Contractors Association (DCA-Europe) was founded as a European association by leading contractors from the horizontal drilling industry in December 1994. Shortly after, in 1999 TDC International joined DCA-Europe and was just awarded a Certificate of Honor for a 20-year membership.

Since the establishment of horizontal directional drilling (HDD), it has become an internationally renowned technical and economical alternative for underground crossing of obstacles for pipelines. Over the years, TDC International and DCA-Europe have been working to communicate alternative and more innovative and environmentally friendly pipeline installation techniques. We are honoured to have been working with DCA-Europe for so many years and look forward to the years to come.

pau wrap® chosen for Natural Reserve pipeline repair

In 2013, a pipe that supplies water to about 70,000 people in Halle-Neustadt and parts of the western Saalekreis in Germany was greatly damaged due to severe flooding. Brochier, the German based construction company selected to rebuild the pipeline in 2018, choose TDC International to coat the pipeline and field joints with the standard 5mm pau wrap®.

Due to the geological and geographical circumstances of the project, it was decided to use a more environmentally friendly approach, the horizontal directional drilling method. Peter Theuerkorn from the municipal utility subsidiary HWS said, “Speaking from a construction point of view, the project was a challenge and a very demanding process, but we are proud with the results.”

Wolf Schrader, Sales Manager of TDC International said, “We are satisfied of our work and involvement in this project. As one of the leading GRP coating companies within the pipeline industry, we understand the importance of providing high services to communities as well as using methods that are more sustainable for our environment. Our collaboration with Brochier was productive, successful and constructive and we are happy with the results.”

One of the leading German pipeline construction magazines, B_I Medien, published an article about TDC International’s role in the coating of pipes for the natural reserve Passendorfer Wiesen. The complete German article can be downloaded HERE and TDC International’s case study can be read HERE.
